What is a Crown?
A dental crown is a tooth-shaped “cap” that is placed over a tooth – to cover the tooth to restore its shape and size, strength, and improve its overall appearance. Crowns made of pure porcelain are the most natural-looking and recommended choice for visible teeth. They replace the exterior portion of a tooth to re-establish its original function and are designed to look like the original – or even better. If a person has experienced tooth decay, suffered a traumatic event that has caused damage, or had severe enamel erosion – a porcelain crown may be an option.
Cerec One-day Crowns
Cerec One-day crowns are a recent advance in cosmetic dentistry made possible through the use of Computer Assisted Design – Computer Assisted Manufacture crown, or CAD-CAM – to design the crown, turning what generally would be two visits into a one visit process.
Once we have determined how the tooth will look, the tooth is shaved down and an impression is taken of your teeth. With the impression, our in-house computer is able to mill a precisely fitting crown out of pure ceramic. Then, the finished crown is applied.
Cerec Connect Crowns
Cerec Connect crowns require an off-site lab to finish the crown. These types of crowns are effective for special situations in which a tooth requires added strength or color adjustments.
The process of making and applying a Cerec Connect crown generally requires two visits. During the first visit, the tooth is shaved down and an impression is taken of your teeth. We then send the impression to an off-site laboratory to make the actual crown. While the crown is being made, we make and apply a temporary crown with a composite material. Once the permanent crown has been made, we will remove the temporary crown and place the permanent crown on your prepared tooth.
